Pither finishes strong at Bathurst

Despite the usual 200,000 strong fans missing from the track, this year’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 didn’t disappoint. Whilst a Bathurst podium is always the driver’s goal, Chris Pither and teammate Steve Owen managed to come away with a straight car and a solid finish of 16th.

Thursday’s three practice sessions were an opportunity for the Coca-Cola backed entry to settle in and explore set ups with a view to a wet and wild Sunday.

The Friday practice sessions saw similar weather and another opportunity for co-driver Steve (Owen) to get re-acquainted with the #22 Team Sydney Commodore. It also delivered qualifying where Pither would ultimately land the car in 23rd place.

Whilst Saturday gave drivers further opportunity to put more laps under their belts, which was crucial for co-drivers who’d had minimal time behind the wheel thanks to a re-adjusted calendar.

The early weather forecasts failed to eventuate come Sunday and teams opted for slicks. Starting from 23rd, the Coca-Cola Commodore got off to a solid start and in true Bathurst style the race became interesting with just 30-laps to go.

Unfortunately, technical issues hindered Pither’s chances of fighting his way through the field which ultimately put them a lap down. The Kiwi and his teammate continued to push hard and, in the end, crossed the line in P16 and a straight car.

“We ended up finishing 16th in the great race,” said Pither.

“As any driver wants, I was aiming much higher, but it just wasn’t to be. Unfortunately, a number of issues lost us time and we dropped a lap. We fought hard, but couldn’t get it back.

“Overall, I’m happy with how we went – it could have been a lot worse. The crew did a great job and it’s been a huge year for everyone.”

After being on the road for over 100 days, the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship season has now come to an end and teams will now enjoy some well-deserved time off.

“Although it’s been a weird and challenging season, fifth place at Darwin was a highlight and a sprint race PB (personal best),” recapped Pither.

“A big thanks to Coca-Cola and all of my personal sponsors for your support throughout the year. Also, a big shout out to all my supporters who could not attend events.

“I’m more motivated than ever and I look forward to coming back stronger in 2021!”
