Solid Day Out for Kanga and Pither

Races 2 and 3 of Round 4 of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Championship showed solid performances from young Kiwi Chris Pither in his Kanga Loaders Commodore.

Pither made ground all day and displayed that he is a great racer, particularly on cold tyres in the early laps.

Race 2:

(16 laps)

Grid Position: 20

Once again the Kanga Loaders young gun showed that he’s a racer through and through, picking up four positions on lap 1.

The demise of Sharpe on lap 2 and Colin Sieders on lap 3 and a great pass under brakes into turn 3 on Cooper put Pither 13th, a gain of seven places in only four laps.

It was then a bit of a lonely race for Pither, with Wood a fair distance ahead and Assaillit some way off behind, although he made up time towards the chequer. McIntyre made a mistake under brakes into turn 3, promoting Chris to his 12th place finish.

Pither: ‘The car wasn’t too bad, although it had a fair bit of oversteer again.

‘So we’ve made a couple of changes, going to softer springs front and rear and made a slight adjustment to the shocks as well.

‘Hopefully that’ll made for a better package in Race 3, but we have to remember that this is only our second outing in this car, so we’re still learning.’

Results: 1 Scott, 2 Slade, 3 Youlden, 4 Marshall, 5 D’Alberto, 6 O’Brien, 7 Caruso, 8 Webb, 9 Fernandez, 10 Sieders, 12 Pither

Race 3:

(26 laps)

Grid Position: 16

A great start by the Kanga Loaders young gun, gaining four positions after only three corners and picking up another one by the finish line on the first lap. But the first lap wasn’t so successful for some. Jose Fernandez got sideways on the exit of turn 2 and was hit by Marshall, who had nowhere else to go and who suffered extensive damage, bringing out the safety car until the end of lap 7.

On the restart Pither came under fire from a hard-charging Sharpe, who took Chris through the very fast turn 1. Lap 13 saw a three-corner long dual between Pither and the wiley and highly experienced Wakefield. Side by side the battle raged through turn 3, down the inside straight and then through turns 4 and 5, but that left Wakefield with the inside running into turn 6 and the position was lost, leaving the Kanga Loaders Commodore in 13th.

Zukanovic was then on the hunt for Kanga Loaders quarry. It took some time but on lap 17 the position was taken under brakes on the way into turn 4. But O’Brien received a drive-through penalty for turning Youlden around, so Pither was back in 13th on the very next lap.

On lap 23 Zukanovic was into the kitty litter on the outside of turn 3 and Chris regained that position, leaving him 12th for the run to the chequer, the car sending out plumes of smoke from a ruptured power steering seal for the final laps.

Pither: ‘The car was handling better and I thought it was a pretty solid effort. I leave here much more confident and am really looking forward to Oran Park in a month’s time.’

Results: 1 Caruso, 2 Scott, 3 D’Alberto, 4 Webb, 5 Sieders, 6 McIntyre, 7 Slade, 8 Wood, 9 Sharpe, 10 Youlden, 12 Pither
